Pocket Gamer's indie launchpad uncovers the best of GDC Europe

Blizzard alumni Awfully Nice Studios come out on top at Gamescom 2014's Big Indie Pitch

The games industry is returning home after another massive week in Cologne, Germany, as GDC Europe and Gamescom draw to a close.

Pocket Gamer was on the scene throughout, naturally, and our Big Indie Pitch event was a real showstopper.

Hosted alongside our grand sponsors Samsung, Upsight and Trailerfarm, the Big Indie Pitch works to put the Gamescom and GDC Europe spotlight firmly on the indies, allowing them to showcase their upcoming games to a panel of industry experts and leading journalists.

The winners recently broke away from Blizzard together, to form two-man indie outfit Awfully Nice Studios, with its debut game Bug Butcher dazzling the panel and grabbing the top spot.

Pitching with meaning

Closely behind were WeirdBeard with 99 Bricks: Wizard Academy, and Motion Twin with HordesZero.

You can expect to see all these studios become recognisable names throughout the industry, so congratulations to everyone for coming along and taking part in the Big Indie Pitch.

You can see our photo gallery from the event on Facebook.

And we've another BIP happening on 20 Wednesday August at Unite 2014, so any indies planning on attending the big Unity event should get their names down right now.

Thanks again to Samsung, Upsight, Trailerfarm and the crowds of indies who made the Big Indie Pitch into yet another rip-roaring success.

Yes. Spanner's his real name. And, yes, he's heard that joke before.
