Vrvana promises a universal VR solution with its multi-platform Totem headset

Goal in sight inside of 24 hours

Vrvana promises a universal VR solution with its multi-platform Totem headset

It seems like a new virtual reality device appears every day, but few appear as encyclopeadic as Vrvana's Totem headset.

The Canadian team behind this device are evidently looking to deliver a one-stop-shop for virtual reality, and the development public has responded very positively to its new Kickstarter campain.

Clearing $95,000 CAD of its $350,000 goal inside of 24 hours, the Totem looks set to hit production.

The headset is a close rival to the Oculus Rift and Sony's Project Morpheus, but also boasts compatibility with any platform that makes use of stereoscopic displays, which means Oculus Rift games and the PS4.

It's also promising compatibility with iOS, Android, PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Essentially, anything with an HDMI output.

Seeing new world, new civilisations

Alongside its twin HD displays, the Totem packs in its own processing power, looking to take some of the strain off its compatible devices and reduce latency.

Factor in two built-in, forward-facing 120Hz 1080P cameras for 3D augmented reality and video pass-through, three-axis gyroscope, accelerometer and magnetometer, and it adds up to a headset that doesn't need any external tracking.

The designer aims to support all the major game development platforms from the outset, including Unity, Unreal Engine, Cryengine and Havok, while including facilities for its own firmware upgrades to handle some degree of future proofing.

Prices and schedules for a retail version aren't available yet, but the dev kit is available via the Kickstarter campaign for around the $500 CAD mark (so somewhere near £300 or $450 USD).

Yes. Spanner's his real name. And, yes, he's heard that joke before.
