Creative England announces its top 50

England's creative industries booming but too London-centric

In light of recent statistics showing that England's creative economy enjoyed its most successful year to date in 2014, Creative England has released a report which showcases the country's best innovators.

Of all the talents recognised in the Creative England 50, a list which aims to celebrate those who turned a creative idea into a commercially-viable project, nearly 40 percent are from the country's thriving games sector.

"The success of the games companies listed in the Creative England 50 demonstrates just how important this thriving industry is to the creative economy,” said industry veteran and champion of British game development Ian Livingstone.

Furthermore, the figures show that the significance of English game development is financial as well as cultural.

“The whole economy is growing, but the creative sector is in a league of its own, growing three times faster than the rest, and generating £8.8 million an hour for the UK,” said Sajid Javid, UK Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

Despite this rapid growth, Britain's creative economy is an unbalanced one - a significant 43 percent of the sector's employment is in London and the South-East of England.

However, gaming clusters such as 'Silicon Spa' popping up in the Warwickshire town of Leamington Spa have done something to tackle this imbalance.

Mobile developers recognised by the Creative England 50 include Pixel Toys, Rumpus Animation, and Yippee! Entertainment.
