App Annie does its monthly roundup

Miniclip's Agar.io was most downloaded iOS game during July 2015

App Annie’s July games index reveals that Miniclip's viral hit Agar.io has taken the mobile world by storm.

Having been an online web browser game for some time, Agar.io raked in over 7 million downloads in its first weekend.

Keeping the momentum

Publisher Miniclip - who worked with the game's creator over this mobile version - has proved that this was not just a flash in the pan, however, since last month Agar.io now scooped the number one spot in the worldwide charts.

According to App Annie, it also now sits at number six in terms of most played games by US iPhone users – beating Crossy Road, Subway Surfers and Minecraft: Pocket Edition.

In that same table, it is also the only game to be released in 2015 – let alone the last month, which is a testimony to Agar.io’s compelling virality.

We spoke to Miniclip’s CCO Saad Choudri, who last month told us that the game’s success could be divided into three main factors: its fanbase on the web, its popularity on Twitch, and Reddit.

Also significantly, its only monetisation at the moment is advertising. There's no IAPs.
