PAC-MAN 256 achieves 5 million downloads

PAC-MAN 256, Hipster Whale's mobile take on Bandai Namco's classic arcade game series, has hit 5 million downloads since its 19 August launch.

The Melboune-based indie studio Hipster Whale earned the right to work with one of gaming's most iconic IPs after shooting to prominence with the ad-supported F2P title Crossy Road.

As such, in a fitting tribute to PAC-MAN 256's 5 million download milestone, PAC-MAN and his ghostly antagonists - Inky, Blinky, Pinky, and Clyde - will all be joining the existing cast of playable Crossy Road characters.

Crossing the road

Hipster Whale's themed Crossy Road update also includes a slightly odd crossover character, in the form of Pac-Chicken - a chicken, like the default avatar in Crossy Road, wearing a PAC-MAN t-shirt.

Whether or not this will inspire existing Crossy Road players to download PAC-MAN 256 remains to be seen, but the game's performance has certainly been impressive so far.

“We are very happy to see such a fantastic start," said representatives of Bandai Namco and Hipster Whale.

"The game is the top downloaded game in 98 countries for all categories and in 104 countries for game categories including USA, UK and Japan.

"We want to thank all the individuals involved in this project and above all: our players!”
