App store intelligence firm AppFigures has found that an overwhelming majority of the most popular mobile games are under 100MB in file size.
Writing on the AppFigures blog, founder and CEO Ariel Michaeli studied the top 100 free and top 100 paid apps on both the App Store and Google Play.
He found that while 19% of the top 100 free games on the App Store are over 100MB, only 4% of the top 100 free games on Google Play exceed that download size.
The smaller the better
This is likely due to download restrictions – Google Play limits developers to 100MB file sizes for the base app, requiring expansion packs to be downloaded for any additional content.
On the side of paid apps, however, 33% of the top 100 paid games on the App Store exceed 100MB, while 44% of the top 100 paid Google Play games going over that limit.
Michaeli also notes that 15 games across both platforms exceed 1GB in file size, which he believes is acceptable to users because "they’ve got a dedicated fan base that’s willing to wait."
