Paid game subscriptions now live on iOS

Can subscriptions thrive in a F2P world?

Paid game subscriptions now live on iOS

Apple has rolled out its subscription model for mobile game developers.

Announced in June, Apple is encouraging developers to adopt the new model by offering them 85% of the revenue for all users who stay subscribed for longer than a year.

Up until that point, the split remains the standard App Store 70/30.

Pay to play

Apple's guidelines for the new scheme also show that there will be support for automatically renewing subscriptions and tiered pricing for different subscription levels.

With subscription-based gaming being effectively superseded by free-to-play in recent years, particularly in the world of PC MMOs, it's certainly intriguing to see Apple (and Google) trying to wind back the clock.
