Super Mario Run hits 20 million pre-registrations on the App Store

Nintendo's next mobile game Super Mario Run has already garnered 20 million pre-registrations on the App Store.

This is according to an interview with Apple CEO Tim Cook by Buzzfeed Japan. Cook said that he visited Nintendo during a recent trip to Japan.

The App Store listing for Super Mario Run allows users to pre-register for notifications about the game's release. It is the first major pre-registration campaign on the App Store.

Not one for VR

The game is also coming to Android, though there is no listing for it on the Google Play store. Pre-registration campaigns on Google Play are frequently available, though typically not several months in advance of the game's launch.

Cook also touched on VR and AR, saying in a translated edition of the interview on Buzzfeed: "VR, I think, has some interesting applications, but I don't think it’s a broad-based technology like AR.

"Augmented reality will take some time to get right, but I do think that it's profound."
