Samsung has officially announced that it has sold five million units of its Gear VR headsets since first launching in November 2015.
The announcement comes from Samsung America President Tim Baxter during a press event at CES 2017 in Las Vegas.
Baxter also revealed that users have viewed over 10 million hours of 360-degree video using the device. He added that the Gear 360 camera is seeing increased usage too.
Growing strong
Five million units sold is over twice as many as estimated by Superdata Research in its end of year report, and suggests that the VR space might be off to a better start than firms have been predicting.
Samsung didn't mention how VR games are performing on its platform. The only major insight into this so far has been sales data from Resolution Games, which states that its game Bait! has sold over 700,000 copies.
Competition in mobile VR is growing particularly rapidly - Google launched its Daydream headset in November 2016 and Xiaomi released its own VR headset in China in October 2016.
