The top ten public developers generated 54% of the global games industry's revenues in 2016

The top ten public games companies generated 54% of the entire global games market's revenue in 2016.

This is according to Newzoo, which has released its latest report on the top 25 public game companies in 2016. It studied the top companies across all games, including PC, console, and mobile.

Tencent topped the chart, generating $10.2 billion in revenue in 2016. Combined with Supercell, which it acquired in 2016, the company generated 13% of all the revenues in the global games market for the year.

Top performers

Sony and Activision Blizzard took second and third spots, generating $7.88 billion and $6.6 billion respectively. Microsoft, Apple, EA, Netease, Google, Bandai Namco and Nintendo round out the top ten.

Netease was identified as the fastest growing company in the top 25, having increased its revenues by 50% year-on-year. Newzoo attributed this to a strong performance by the company in China.

Nintendo clung onto its number 10 position despite being the only company in the top 10 to see declining revenues. However, Newzoo believes that the success of the Switch should swing its fortunes around in the future.
