Mobile developers generate over $70 billion in App Store revenues

Mobile developers have earned over $70 billion in App Store revenues since the storefront launched in 2008.

Apple said that in the past 12 months alone the number of downloads have increased by more than 70%.

After opening up the subscription business model to developers across all 25 app categories, the number of active paid subscriptions on the App Store is also said to have risen by 58% year-over-year.

Growing fast

Games and Entertainment still lead the App Store as the top grossing categories, while other areas such as Lifestyle apps and Health and Fitness continue to grow.

The Photo and Video category is among the fastest-growing sections at nearly 90% growth.

"People everywhere love apps and our customers are downloading them in record numbers," said Philip Schiller, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing.

“$70 billion earned by developers is simply mind-blowing. We are amazed at all of the great new apps our developers create and can’t wait to see them again next week at our Worldwide Developers Conference.”
