Next Games pushes into AR and location-based games with Lume Games acquisition

The Walking Dead: No Man's Land developer Next Games has acquired Hidden Heroes developer Lume Games for an undisclosed sum.

The studio was picked up by Next Games in February 2017 and has now been integrated into the company's development team.

Lume Games specialised in mixed reality games, expertise which will be used for a new title from Next Games that blends augmented reality with location-based play.

Through this acquisition and aggressive hiring, Next Games has now grown its headcount from 24 employees to 93. Hiring has mostly been in business development and marketing.

Next Games is also currently prototyping a new title based on a licensed IP which has yet to be revealed. It announced that it was working on a game using the Blade Runner license in June 2017.

Going strong

The company also posted its financials for the first half of 2017, showing revenues of €19.5 million ($22.6 million), an increase of 52% year-on-year. It saw profits of €150,000, up from a loss in H1 FY16 of €3.5 million.

DAUs grew to 498,000, up from 435,000 year-on-year, while ARPDAU also increased from €0.17 to €0.20. However, its MAUs took a tumble, falling from 1.76 million in H1 FY16 to 1.47 million in H1 FY17.

It’s a strong start to 2017 for the developer, which went public in March 2017. The move was immediately accreditive to the company's revenue, which almost doubled in its Q1 FY17 compared to Q1 FY16.
