App Store changes will not affect how app intelligence firms gather their data

App Store grossing rank data will still be available despite it being dropped from the App Store UI in iOS 11, according to Apptopia.

The app intelligence firm confirmed this in an email to its users, noting that it sources its data from backend servers and not from the frontend services. Other intelligence firms also presumably use these servers to access their data.

"This is how we've been collecting this data for over 5 years now, and none of these app store changes (including this one) has any effect on our access to that data," wrote Apptopia COO Jonathan Kay in the email.

"More so, this UI change doesn't impact the algorithms which decide what apps are ranked where, and when. So, we are fully operational and there is no impact whatsoever in this regard."

Everything's changing

While this will not affect app intelligence firm's data, the change could still have an impact on the ranks themselves. Kay suggested that due to Apple's focus on editorialising content and curation, the games it chooses to highlight could see a bump in the rankings.

The new App Store launches with iOS 11 later today, September 19th. Be sure to take a look at our article on what these changes could mean to developers.
