Tencent's popular mobile MOBA Honor of Kings lands in the US as Arena of Valor

Hasn't got off to an explosive start, but there's still time

Tencent's popular mobile MOBA Honor of Kings lands in the US as Arena of Valor

Tencent's wildly popular mobile MOBA Honor of Kings has finally launched in the US under the name Arena of Valor.

The game was pushed out to the US on December 19th 2017. It has not had the explosive beginning some may have predicted – it reached 318th on the overall iPhone download charts, and 398th on the grossing charts.

Arena of Valor has fared slightly better on iPad, hitting 194th on the overall download charts in the US. However, it only reached 889th on the overall grossing ranks.

Time to grow

Given enough time to grow, Arena of Valor could be enormously successful in the West. It has been instrumental to Tencent's continued enormous growth, helping push mobile revenues up 84% to $2.75 billion in its last financials.

That said, the game has so far failed to make much of an impact in Europe. As of October 2017, it had peaked at 79th on the iPhone grossing charts in the UK, but only occasionally broke into the top 100 ranks thereafter.

Our IAP Inspector, while not providing a final verdict, found Arena of Valor to be well-monetised, saying that it "admirably translates the appeal of the MOBA to the mobile space."

The game's next step will be to launch on Nintendo's Switch console. An open beta was expected by the end of 2017, but there has been no news on this as yet.
