Tencent trialling a new feature to halt high-spending by underage users

Tencent Games is introducing a new service to prevent overspend in games by underage users.

The “Underage User Game Spending Reminder” notifies payment account holders when a suspected underage player’s daily spending reaches $77 (RMB 500) or more. Tencent hopes that the mechanism will help prevent out of control spending habits in kids.

A press release from the company read: “After over a year of multiple rounds of research and testing, we have recently launched the ‘underage user game spending reminder’ service. The feature is now in the trial stage.”

The system will first notify the user that their spending habits are reaching a critical threshold. Tencent have amassed over 200 customer service personnel to contact account holders before confirming further purchases, and intends to work with parents to help monitor and manage their children’s spending habits.

Tencent holds a firm grip on the Chinese game market. The company produces titles like Honour of Kings, which made $185 million in April alone. It also distributes Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds in the region, and is set to acquire 10 per cent of PUBG parent company Bluehole.
