The Nintendo Switch is the fastest-selling console of this generation in the US.

Data outfit NPD Group shows that over a 21 month period, the Switch sold over 8.7 million units in the country.

That’s over double the figure reported back in January when the Switch was named the fastest-selling console of all time in the US, with nearly 4.8 million units sold. Hardware sales have continued that trend.

A release from also claims that Nintendo hardware sales are at their highest annual totals since 2011.

It was also reported that Nintendo was the top-selling US publisher in 2018 so far. Ending in November, the report doesn’t include the successful launch of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

That game sold over 1.2 million copies in its first three days in Japan, while internal Nintendo figures put US sales at 3 million units in its first 11 days.

Nintendo has launched a number of hit titles on the Switch, such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe have sold over four million and five million units respectively.

“We are thrilled to see such a strong reaction from consumers in the second holiday season for Nintendo Switch,” said Nintendo of America SVP of sales and marketing Doug Bowser.

“We’re looking forward to delivering more excitement and smiles to our fans in the coming year and beyond.”
