Apple could soon let App Store users gift in-app purchases to others after the company updated its Review Guidelines.
As spotted by MacRumours, section 3.1 of the guidelines now states: “apps may enable gifting of items that are eligible for in-app purchase to others. Such gifts may only be refunded to the original purchaser and may not be exchanged.”
A Christmas gift?
Previously developers could not directly or indirectly enable gifting of IAPs, such as virtual currency or in-game items.
There is currently no function that would allow for the gifting of IAPs through the App Store. The updated guidelines might mean Apple is about to roll out new features to enable this.
Users can, however, gift apps to others.
