Version 2.0 goes on show to select audience

Developers get a taste of Android Eclair
Over on MobileEnt.biz, they've caught wind that Google is holding three invitation-only demonstrations of its 2.0 major update to the Android operating system today, two of which are being held in California, while the third is in London.

The internet giant will have engineers and Eclair-equipped devices to show off, demonstrating the new screen sizes and platform features unique to this evidently significant update.

Motorola's Droid handset goes on sale this week, which will be the first Android 2.0 device to go on sale. This device is generating a lot of attention as the first serious Android contender for the iPhone, boasting a 550MHz CPU, 3.7 inch WVGA-resolution touchscreen, five megapixel camera, wi-fi, stereo Bluetooth, accelerometer, a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard and GPS.

As exciting as Android 2.0 promises to be, there's been a murmur of concern regarding hardware fragmentation throughout the mobile software industry since the open source platform first launched.

The danger with major upgrades like this is that the first generation of Android-powered handsets - some of which are still waiting to launch - could easily become obsolete overnight.

We'll bring you the details on what Eclair's updates are as the news comes in.

Yes. Spanner's his real name. And, yes, he's heard that joke before.
