Android's daily activation rate hits 550,000 as app downloads top 6 billion

Up 50,000 in little over two weeks

Android's daily activation rate hits 550,000 as app downloads top 6 billion
While Google's second quarter revenues of $9.03 billion might have stolen the attention of the mainstream press, on the mobile front, news Android's activation rate now sits at 550,000 a day is the big story.

Google CEO Larry Page made the declaration during a post earnings report conference call, branding the figure as "a huge number even by Google's standards".

All in the numbers

It comes little over two weeks since Google pegged the platform's daily activation rate at 500,000, itself up from a daily rate of 400,000 activations back in May.

As an aside, SVP of product management Susan Wojcicki also revealed there have now been 135 million Android devices activated around the globe – up from 100 million two months ago - across 400 different models.

Those 135 million devices can now access an Android Market consisting of 250,000 apps, party to 6 billion downloads to date.

That compares favourably to BlackBerry App World's 1 billion, but is down some distance from the 15 billion Apple's App Store has amassed.
