Android daily activations top 850,000

300 million devices now in the wild

Android daily activations top 850,000
Google's SVP of mobile and digital content Andy Rubin has claimed the company is now activating 850,000 new Android devices a day.

The figure, which was cited in a blog post detailing the firm's plans for Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, represents year-on-year growth of more than 250 percent, with devices activated since launch now topping 300 million.

All in the numbers

In all, Rubin claims more than 800 Android devices have been launched since Google rolled the platform out in late 2008, with the firm's primary marketplace – Android Market – boasting more than 450,000 apps in all.

"Each and every day, we are humbled by the trajectory of Android and our partners," said Rubin in the blog post.

"These numbers are a testament to the break-neck speed of innovation that defines the Android ecosystem."

Rubin claims Android Market now plays host to around 1 billion apps a month, which – given the platform passed 10 billion downloads at the start of December – suggests total downloads to date sit at the 12 billion mark.
