Apple shares hit all-time high on quad-core iPad 3 reports

New York reveal imminent, claims CNBC

Apple shares hit all-time high on quad-core iPad 3 reports
Shares in Apple have reached an all-time high after sources raised the possibility of an imminent reveal of a quad-core equipped iPad 3.

As first detailed on Twitter, CNBC claims "sources" have stated Apple will officially unveil iPad 3 in New York next week, with the latest version of the market leading tablet likely to feature a quad-core CPU and 4G LTE technology.

Apple shares jumped more than 6 percent as a result, topping a record $530 as the news broke.

Chip chatter

The report comes after online leaks pointed towards an iPad 3 equipped with an A5X CPU, rather than an A6, as expected.

Nothing is known about either chip bar its name, but commentators suggested the moniker hinted at only a partial upgrade to the existing dual-core A5 chip, which currently features in iPad 2 and iPhone 4S.

It's also been suggested electronics manufacturer Foxconn is readying its first shipments of iPad 3 units to Apple's Cupertino HQ for arrival no later than 9 March.

Location, location, location

Apple is yet to put a date on its iPad 3 reveal, though a New York press conference would represent a departure from past practice, which has seen all previous iPad hardware revealed in San Francisco.

Indeed, Apple Insider notes The Loop's Jim Dalrymple took to Twitter immediately after the news broke to dismiss the notion of a New York exposé, branding the story "wrong".
