Free to play release benefits from indie project

First Bungie Aerospace release Crimson: Steam Pirates to hit iPad on September 1
Though only unveiled as the first fruit of Bungie's new Aerospace venture at the start of July, Crimson: Steam Pirate's due date is fast approaching.

The Harebrained Schemes' release will hit the App Store for iPad on September 1, with the game the first to benefit from Bungie's partnership program, designed to hand mobile social studios access to development tools.

Its release will also mark Bungie's transition into a full blown publisher, having begun life as an independent outfit itself back in 1991.

Building up a head of steam

"Bungie Aerospace will allow us to explore game creation in multiple formats with some amazingly talented teams,” COO Pete Parsons said of the venture back in July.

"Now that we've returned to our roots as an independent studio, we are in a position to launch Bungie Aerospace to support, foster, and elevate like-minded, independent developers."
Crimson: Steam Pirates will be available for download for free, with the first eight levels served up without charge.

Consumers looking to play beyond that point, however, will be required to pay a one-off fee of $1.99 for a further eight missions.

The game was originally scheduled for release on Android as well as iOS, though there's no mention of a version for Google's platform – or, indeed, iPhone – in the game's pre-release blurb.
