Capcom heralds 5 year plan to get to grips with mobile

Capcom CEO Kenzo Tsujimoto has revealed the firm is to make mobile the focus of a five year business plan designed to turn around its fortunes in the smartphone market.

Citing the success of Monster Hunter 4 and its slot machine business during the past year, Tsujiimoto used an open letter published on the publisher's website to admit that Capcom's "mobile contents business has not met our expectations".

To address this, Capcom plans to strengthen its mobile offerings alongside its downloadable content, online operations, and brand contents.

'Unprecedented magnitude'

The overall goal of this new strategy is to "...provide to as many people as possible a variety of products that take full advantage of Capcom's vast amount of content".

In order to meet these aggressive goals, Tsujimoto plans to hire "at least 100" software developers every year.

In a similar letter, Capcom's COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto - CEO Kenzo's son – added that the firm needs to focus on "two key trends" in the immediate future, "the popularity of smartphones and tablets and the increasingly social nature of games."

Yet the younger Tsuijimoto was quick to clarify that Capcom doesn't consider mobile to be the only horse in the race.

"The outlook for the game industry is bright. Strong sales last year of new game consoles like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One point to even more demand for software."
