Foursquare notches up 725,000 users in first year
While MyTown would appear to be topping the location-based social app charts right now – with 1.5 million users and counting – rival Foursquare has nonetheless had an impressive first year, notching up around 725,000 users of its own.

Foursquare revealed its latest total via its Twitter account, those behind the app stating that it is "closing in on 725k users and 22 million check-ins".

According to V3, that compares favourably with Twitter, which had a userbase of 340,000 after 16 months online, although it puts it well behind Facebook's year one total of 1 million.

More importantly, Foursquare's latest total means it's trailing Booyah's MyTown by some distance.

Nonetheless, Foursquare has been generating headlines aplenty of late – link-ups with television networks, fashion brands and, perhaps most crucially, Microsoft, all helping to propel the app into the public consciousness.

Home and away

Foursquare also has a vital advantage over MyTown because it can be used in territories outside the US, like the UK, as well as on Android devices.

The app has considerable backing at home too though. Both Foursquare – and rival Gowalla – having enjoyed a fairly major boost in recent weeks following their appearances at the South by Southwest festival in Austin.
