Google Play surpasses 25 billion downloads

5 billion in last three months alone

Google Play surpasses 25 billion downloads
Google has announced that more than 25 billion apps have been downloaded from Google Play.

The company's last announcement on Android download figures was back in June 2012, when Google confirmed that more than 20 billion apps had been downloaded and installed by its users.

In other words, some 5 billion Android apps have been downloaded in the last three months.

To celebrate, the company is hosting a five-day promotional sale that will see a number of popular apps discounted to 25c/25p.

Compare and contrast

By way of comparison, Apple's App Store reached the 25 billion download milestone back in March 2012, and reached 30 billion in June.

Although that may make it seem as though Apple is racing ahead, it's worth noting that the App Store launched some three months ahead of the Android Market (as it was then known), so the gap is a little narrower than it might seem.

RIM, meanwhile, revealed in July 2012 that that BlackBerry users had downloaded a total of more than 3 billion applications since BlackBerry App World launched in April 2009.
