Former Gears of War 3 senior gameplay designer Lee Perry has announced his new outfit BitMonster has licensed Epic's Unreal Engine 3 to bring "triple-A production values" to iOS.
The studio's first game, Lili, is descrived as an "adventure RPG hybrid", with Lee claiming working with Epic's engine will allow his outfit to raise the bar on Apple's platform.
Truly unreal
"Epic has been extremely supportive of our new studio and in helping us build the game of our dreams," said Perry, president of BitMonster.
"We set out to create an adventure that is appropriate for nearly anyone.
"As a designer, it's exciting to see that the Unreal Engine 3 tools are better than ever, and they provide everything we need to achieve a gratifying and imaginative experience."
Perry, of course, isn't the first developer with console experience to make a move on smartphone platforms.
BitMonster's drive to deliver a 3D adventure, however, appears the product of a mobile market increasingly targeted by studios with high-spec ideals.
Love letters
"BitMonster is set to deliver the triple-A production values that appeal to discerning players," added heads of North American licensing at Epic Games, Joe Kreiner.
"Given this team's crazy mix of passion, talent and chemistry, and with the latest Unreal Engine tools in their hands, BitMonster has a winning recipe for success."
Despite the triple-A focus, however, Perry said this is a mass-market title aimed at all types of gamers, rather than one that appeals purely to those with a console background.
