Nokia won't release its one and only MeeGo phone in US or UK
If people were confused when Nokia unveiled the flash looking MeeGo powered N9 in June, they'll be even more flummoxed by news the handset won't feature in two of the world's biggest markets.

Following the news Nokia won't be launching N9 in the US, the company has also confirmed that there are "no plans" to sell the handset in the UK, either.

The statement comes as Nokia US head Chris Weber confirmed support for Symbian will be pulled across North America when the Finnish firm's first Windows Phone launches.

There's been no claim of similar intent in Europe or Asia, where Symbian traditionally has a much stronger presence, but Nokia's one and only MeeGo device will now not see the light of day in one of the continent's major markets.

"As an organisation, Nokia takes a market by market approach to product rollout and each country decides which products to introduce from those available," the company said in a statement.

"These decisions are based on a local assessment of existing and upcoming products that make up Nokia's product portfolio and are intended to provide the best local portfolio for the UK market.

"Although we are delighted with the very positive reception that the Nokia N9 has received, here in the UK there are no plans to offer the Nokia N9 at present."

N9 sports a 3.9 inch AMOLED display and an 8MP wide angle Carl Zeiss autofocus sensor camera, and had been scheduled to be in stores "later this year".

However, Nokia's first Windows Phone – dubbed See Ray – comes with both especially similar specs and a largely identical design (the same 8MP Carl Zeiss lens camera likely to make the cut), suggesting the firm is wary of launching two similar handsets onto the market at the same time.

Weber has claimed Windows Phone will receive Nokia's biggest ever push in the US, branding its launch as "larger than anything we have done in the past and the most we will invest in any market worldwide".
