Sony Mobile has announced changes to 'the global operational structure of its development sites,' which will result in the loss of 1,000 jobs by March 2014.
The principal casualty of this restructuring is Sony Mobile's office in Lund, Sweden.
In October 2012, the company plans to move its corporate headquarters as well as other, unnamed functions from Sweden to its offices in Tokyo, resulting in 650 job losses.
The remaining headcount reductions will mostly be among its consultants based in Sweden.
Sony says it will maintain a presence in Lund, though, with remaining staff focusing primarily on software and application development.
A bad week
"Sony has identified the mobile business as one of its core businesses and the Xperia smartphone portfolio continues to gain momentum with customers and consumers worldwide," explained Sony Mobile president and CEO Kunimasa Suzuki.
"We are accelerating the integration and convergence with the wider Sony group to continue enhancing our offerings, and a more focused and efficient operational structure will help to reduce Sony Mobile's costs, enhance time to market efficiency and bring the business back to a place of strength. "
These cuts follow hot on the heels of other grim news for Sony Group employees.
Only yesterday, SCE confirmed that it was calling time on game development at Studio Liverpool, the venerable developer responsible for the Wipeout series.
