Already flush with notoriety thanks to their inventive form factor, Sony's first Android tablets have been officially unveiled, taking on the names of S and P.
The two devices had made a regular appearance in the headlines after their designs hit the web via a series of crude sketches.
Their existence was later confirmed by Sony, who originally dubbed them the S1 and S2, with rumours pointing towards a September launch.
Now, the new Sony S and Sony P have received their first live showcase at IFA 2011 in Berlin, with Sony president Sir Howard Stringer saying of the tablet market, "It's not about who makes the first, it's about who makes them better".
As easy as S and P
It's the clamshell Sony P that has drawn most attention, sporting two 5-inch 1024x480 displays that work either together or independently of each other.
It's the first Android to split the display in this manner, with one able to act as a keyboard in certain situations.
Different apps can also be run on each screen at the same time.
Split launch
The Sony S sports a more typical look, with a 9.4-inch IPS display equipped with Sony TruBlack and Bravia technologies.
The S will come in both 4G and wi-fi enabled forms (the former currently only confirmed for AT&T in the US), equipped with either 16GB or 32GB hard drives.
Nvidia's Tegra 2 is running under the hood, though Sony had earlier suggests a variety of different manufacturers for dual-core chips had been sourced.
As PlayStation certified devices, it's also believed both devices will have access to Sony's PlayStation Suite, so far delivered via Sony Ericsson's Xperia handsets, and also bound for PS Vita.
The Sony Tablet S will launch in Europe this September, starting at 479, with the P following on in November for 599.
