Unity 4.2 launches, doubles the number of supported mobile platforms
The popular - and now free - Unity engine released its 4.2 update after months of development and testing.

Most excitingly, the 4.2 update doubles the amount of mobile platforms Unity supports, adding options for Windows Phone 8, Windows 8, and Blackberry 10.

Users of the free version of Unity can publish on any mobile platform - including the three recently added ones - free of cost.

Those using Unity Pro can use the Windows Store Pro deployment option, which includes both Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 apps platforms.

More for less

Additionally, Unity 4.2 makes several existing Unity Pro features available to users of the free version of the popular game engine.

The features include realtime shadows (one-directional light only, hard shadows only) and text-based serialisation of materials, amongst others.

The Unity 4.2 update also includes several graphic and audio tweaks for mobile platforms designed to help bring a bit of extra shine and polish to games created through the engine.
