WWDC 2011: Apple adds turn based play, avatars to Game Center

iOS 'most popular gaming platform'

WWDC 2011: Apple adds turn based play, avatars to Game Center
This year's WWDC keynote wasn't only home to announcements of the huge variety.

In fact, if you were sat tied to your PC eagerly awaiting an iPhone 5 unveiling, such revelations never actually materialised.

Instead, much of the new content Apple laid open during its press briefing focused on far more subtle upgrades, such as the refresh bound for Game Center.

A real games centre

Games remain an ever important slice of the iOS pie, and Apple backed up Game Center – which, it has to be said, hasn't exactly set the world alight since it rolled out with iOS 4 – with the claim that iOS is the most popular gaming platform on the planet.

As such, Game Center is set to benefit from many of the features most gamers are used on the likes of Xbox Live.

Indeed, if anyone at Apple claims they're not influenced by the actions of their rivals only needs watch the briefing itself to deduce that they're telling porkies.

Feature focus

Built-in support for turn-based gaming was mentioned, as well as an improved friends list that allows you to compare your games to those on your friends list.

Avatars are also on the roster, although these take the form of a photo, presumably of yourself.

Finally, the Game Center app will act as a marketplace in itself, allowing you to buy Game Center enabled games directly, just like – you guessed it – Xbox Live on Windows Phone.
