Tencent takes China by storm with mobile browser game that has players applauding Chinese president

Tencent has once again taken China by storm with its latest game that has players applauding Chinese President Xi Jinping at a recent speech.

As reported by What's On Weibo, Such a Great Speech: Applaud Xi Jinping shows players a short segment of President Xi's three-and-a-half hour speech. They are then given 19 seconds to applaud by tapping the screen.

The game quickly became a viral hit in China, with a reported 400 million plays on October 18th 2017. By October 20th, the game had allegedly been played over 1.2 billion times.

Fastest fingers first

Players are scored based on how many times they are able to applaud in the game. Some players report "clap rates" of 1695, which is the equivalent of around 90 taps per second.

Through our own testing, it seems the game clock actually runs longer than 19 seconds, either by design or simply due to slow servers. Such a high number of claps therefore does not seem impossible.

If you are on mobile, you can try the game out for yourself here.

Tencent's other major game, Honor of Kings, has also caused a stir recently. It was reported that a women lost sight in one of her eyes after playing the game too much.
