Updated and amended Kongregate Arcade reappears on Android Market

Though media speculation regarding the unannounced removal of Kongregate Arcade from Android Market just hours after it had made its debut focused on possible foul play, Kongregate itself has decided to take Google at its word.

Google's problem with the app centred around claims that it acts as an app store in its own right.

In a statement to Kongregate CEO Jim Greer following the title's removal, the firm stated that Android Market cannot be used to distribute other app stores.

An Arcade adventure

As such, Kongregate Arcade was in breach of the marketplace's terms and conditions - a claim Greer naturally refuted.

However, as explained at the time, Kongregate Arcade isn't an app store at all. Instead, the app acts as a portal to a library of more than 300 free Flash games, all played in its Webkit based browser.

Nevertheless, in an attempt to allay Google's concerns, Kongregate has taken the decision to launch a revised version of the app on the marketplace, complete with changes designed to make its desired function more visible.

Second crack of the whip

This release retains the browsers address bar at the top of the screenuntil the game in question jumps to full screen a "standard feature of Flash", Greer claims, and one the firm hopes will dispel any illusion consumers hmight ave that the game is installed on the phone itself.

Likewise, instead of downloading and managing games on the device's SD card, the new Kongregate Arcade app uses the browser's cache to store offline files.

Whether both changes are enough to please Google remains to be seen, but you can be sure that Kongregate and the press alike will be keeping an eye on the firm's reaction to the app's reappearance in the hours to come.
