Video: The emotional case for in-game music

As part of Pocket Gamer Connects San Francisco 2015, David Ari Leon, CEO of SoundMind Music, gave a talk on the importance of using music in games.

"We're all pulled to engage with music, it's in our DNA," said Leon, and because of this he says that music "can really powerfully engage your audience."

Directions and transitions

He recommends that you "have a strong and clear direction of what you want", and can establish a direction, find examples, and write a synopsis of the sound you're looking for.

Leon also suggests that you "keep in mind how your music will transition", so the soundtrack doesn't end up jarring against the gameplay or simply looping forever and becoming repetitive.
