Roblox closes $92 million funding round to support its 48 million MAUs

Social game developer Roblox has closed a $92 million funding round as it continues to bring in new staff to support its MMO sandbox title Roblox.

The funding round was led by Meritech Capital Partners and Index Ventures. Meritech Managing Director Craig Sherman and Index co-founder Neil Rimer will join the board on observer seats as part of the investment.

The game currently attracts 48 million MAUs across all platforms including mobile. It allows players to create their own games within the game and earn money from revenue sharing, with some teams generating as much as $50,000 a month from their creations.

An imagination platform

"We have a vision of creating an imagination platform - the ultimate platform for play. A place for kids around the world to play, create, build, and imagine together." said CEO David Baszucki, as reported by Forbes.

"We're already profitable, but we wanted to strengthen balance sheet as we pursue our vision."

Roblox has been expanding beyond its game in recent months. In January 2017 it launched its own line of Roblox-themed toys based on player-designed characters.
