Apple to cut commission rates for app affiliate links to 2.5%

Apple is reducing the amount of commission that affiliates will receive from affiliate links from 7% to 2.5%.

In an email sent out to members of the affiliate program, as posted on Twitter by Federico Viticci, Apple stated that the change will be made globally on May 1st 2017.

Interestingly, only apps and "in-app content" will be affected by the changes. Affiliate links to any other content sold by Apple will still receive a 7% commission.

Global equality

The change will only affect how much money affiliates make from their links. Developers will still receive their 70% cut from the sale of their app.

It is unclear why exactly Apple has chosen to cut commissions for affiliate links to apps only, and not any other form of content.

The change does bring the rest of the world in line with Japan, however, where affiliates already only receive a 2.5% commission from their links to apps.
