GamesLab Leeds grants $200,000 to nine Yorkshire devs in latest round of funding

Creative England's Yorkshire-focused funding program Gameslab Leeds has given out £157,000 ($203,000) of its £1 million fund to nine developers throughout the region.

The nine studios have received grants from the fund to help develop their games, while a handful of other developers have received additional forms of investment. This round of funding has so far created or safeguarded 40 jobs and is set to create another 18.

Recipients of the funding include work-for-hire developer Red Kite Games and mobile VR studio Fierce Kaiju. Three developers – BetaJester, Ocean Spark Studios, and D M Media – are today showcasing their games as part of the Be More Creative event in Leeds.

Get creative

"Gameslab has proven itself to be a tangible and practical force in developing and driving the gaming industry in Leeds forward; the results to date have been fantastic," said Solomon Nwabueze, Director of Content at Creative England.

"We select the companies that we invest in very carefully; we’re working to support the creative economy outside of London, driving inclusive growth by nurturing fascinating IP."

The Gameslab Leeds fund was established in November 2016 with a £300,000 fund. By February 2017 it had already awarded £150,000 of its budget to various developers in Yorkshire.
