Amazon launches Amazon Coins platform currency in UK and Germany

Gives away 400 Coins per user to prime the pump

Amazon launches Amazon Coins platform currency in UK and Germany

Six months after it launched in the US, Amazon Coins are now available in the UK and Germany.

Amazon Coins are the e-commerce company's own platform-wide virtual currency, which can be used to buy paid apps as well as make in-game purchases from the Amazon for Android Appstore.

Of course, for this to happen, developers do have to support the currency.

Amazon says the effort is worth it.

"For many Indie developers, Coins has accounted for the majority of their revenue since Coins launched in the US," it claims on its developers web site.

Free-to-buy

As with the US launch, Amazon has primed its new markets, giving away small amount of the currency to Kindle Fire owners.

For example, I've been given 400 Amazon Coins - worth £4 according to Amazon.

Maybe I'll charge up that old Kindle Fire HD I've got lying around...
