Android appliances on the horizon
We've heard previous rumours that Android - which to be blunt, isn't shaping up to be the smartphone revolution we'd hoped - could soon migrate into household appliances, such as televisions, remote controls and home phones.

A new report on Forbes takes another look at the possibility of manufacturers adapting Google's smartphone operating system, and suggests that such devices could be with us this year.

These Android-powered devices, ranging from home automation and lighting controllers to televisions, house phones and DVRs, will make use of the free, open-source operating system to add touchscreen features and connectivity easily and seamlessly, while providing the backbone for simple expansion and sophisticated functionality.

Apparently technology company Touch Revolution will be providing touchscreens and modified Android systems for just these kinds of devices within the year, meaning we could soon be waking up for a chat with our toaster - Red Dwarf style.

Yes. Spanner's his real name. And, yes, he's heard that joke before.
