EA's Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time stormed to the top of the iOS download charts in August according to stats released by App Annie, breaking records in the process.
The firm reports that, in it's sharp journey to the summit of Apple's download charts, it surpassed the total number of downloads its predecessor amassed in just a few of weeks.
Indeed, EA reported that downloads hit 25 million at the start of September.
Money matters
The reason? As previously stated, EA's decision to take the franchise free-to-play was always likely to bolster take-up as indeed was the fact it was featured in more than 100 countries by Apple.
However, when it comes to revenue, Plants vs. Zombies 2 is nowhere to be seen in App Annie's rundown of the top grossing games in iOS across the same period.
While the original Plants vs. Zombies amassed $1 million in its first nine days on sale, it would appear the free-to-play model isn't as immediately lucrative.
EA is yet to talk openly about how well Plants vs. Zombies 2 is monetising, though our early look at its performance suggested it was off to a slow, if impressive, start.
As things stand, Plants vs. Zombies 2 is #33 on the top grossing iPhone charts in the US, and #43 in the UK.
