F2P games sidelined as Ridiculous Fishing and Badland win Apple's 2013 accolades

Vlambeer's Ridiculous Fishing and Badlandfrom Frogmind have been named Apple's games of the year on iPhone and iPad respectively, beating out top competition from some of 2013's biggest releases.

Revealed – as is typical – on the App Store itself, Ridiculous Fishing was named as the top pick for iPhone in 2013 ahead of Simogo's DEVICE 6 and the controversial-yet-popular Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time.

"Holy shit. Ridiculous Fishing has been such a strange emotional rollercoaster for the entire team," Vlambeer's business and development head Rami Ismail told us in response.

"This is the fourth time our Twitter feeds exploded with Ridiculous Fishing news - first with bad news, then the overwhelming release, followed by the Apple Design Award and now Game Of The Year. We don't really know what to say."

Badland, meanwhile, came in ahead of 2K's XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Kevin Ng's Impossible Road on iPad.

Perhaps more interesting, however, is Apple's top indie and blockbuster picks.

Of the six indie releases highlighted in the UK – Oceanhorn, LIMBO Game, Joe Danger, rymdkapsel, Mikey Hooks and EPOCH.2 – all are paid releases. In the US, paid releases The Room Two, Kingdom Rush: Frontiers HD and Frozen Synapse also make the list.

Similarly, when it comes to Apple's top blockbuster games in the UK, only one – Gameloft's Asphalt 8: Airborne – is a free game.

You can view Apple's review of 2013 for yourself over on the App Store.
