Google likely to follow

Apple to turn operator with launch of iOS mobile network, claims industry expert
Apple could be preparing to launch a mobile network exclusive to its own devices designed to take on traditional carriers in 2012.

That's according to wireless industry expert Whitey Bluestein, who claims Apple's wireless mobile data network would see it selling bundles for its iOS line-up, taking on the packages traditionally sold through operator partners across the globe.

Trend setter?

Bluestein believes Google could well follow suit, but Apple would hold a significant advantage thanks to a combination of its own retail outlets, Apple Care and iTunes, which boasts 250 million credit card numbers on file.

"The battleground is set, but Apple will be the first mover," said Bluestein to a note to investors.

"Google will have to scramble because it lacks retail distribution, experience with subscriber services and the iTunes ecosystem of content. iTunes and the iTunes Store provide Apple with one-click buying and customer care.

"Google can acquire most of these capabilities, as it has before, but it is not a core competency of the company."

Regaining independence

Such rumours do not come entirely out of the blue. Recently, Western Wireless founder John Stanton revealed he had previously worked with Apple's former CEO Steve Jobs on becoming a mobile operator prior to the launch of the first iPhone.

"He wanted to replace carriers, he and I spent a lot of time talking about whether synthetically you could create a carrier using Wi-Fi spectrum," said Stanton.

"That was part of his vision. If I were a carrier, I'd be concerned about the dramatic shift in power that occurred."

So what's stopping Apple?

The company's lack of presence in the mobile spectrum is a major drawback, which would require the firm to make a significant investment and risk damaging its relationship with existing operators.

Nevertheless, with 4G auctions in the UK approaching, Apple could become a surprise bidder.

Bluestein's argues the network could be ready to launch within the current financial year, which could mean Apple could launch the upcoming fifth generation iPhone exclusively with its own network.
