New Year, New Job: Fishlabs on standing out in a sea of applicants
With 2013 well and truly underway, now's typically the time when the industry's great and good take a quick look around and, CV willing, consider making a swift move to a rival firm.

But how can you stand out from the pack, and what are the skills that studios are really looking for in this industry?

To find out, we decided to sample the opinion of those leading the very firms folk may be eyeing up a move to, getting to grips with just what successful applicants have that sets them apart from the masses.

Next up, here's lead recruiter at Fishlabs Marc Morian with his top tips for finding a new job in 2013.Pocket Gamer: What skills will be most in demand throughout the mobile games industry in 2013 and beyond?

Marc Morian: Given the steadily rising costs of user-acquisition across the industry, those who can lower them and/or increase revenue from existing customers will be in ever-increasing demand.

Be it keen performance marketers, resourceful F2P game designers, innovative monetisation managers, or thrifty payment experts – they'll all be sought after.

We'll also be seeing a continuous rise in demand for mobile game developers, especially those who have already gained experience on other platforms since this will tremendously facilitate companies' cross-platform ambitions and transfer valuable knowledge that has been acquired over decades.

What competencies and/or qualifications might your company be looking for from any candidates this year?

Overall we'll be following the industry in looking for the skills I just mentioned. Given our specific positioning, however, we'll prefer triple-A backgrounds when it comes to developers and game designers.

With regards to the latter, we'll do what we can to identify those who are able to find the right balance between monetisation and a satisfying, fun gaming experience – that's today's key challenge.

Still, when in doubt we'll always give preference to quality, since it's the only way to become and stay successful in the long run.

As such, we are looking for individuals who share our passion for quality, no matter what their position with Fishlabs will be.

What's your one piece of advice for those seeking a new job in the industry in this year?

Since so many candidates – veterans and newbies alike – are still getting them wrong, I'd prefer to remind everyone of the basics: submit a detailed, comprehensive and easy-to-read CV.

Make sure your cover letter answers the key questions: Why games? Why mobile/browser/console etc.? Why this company? Why this particular job? Why you, not someone else? Why should we believe you can actually do the job?Relate your previous experience to the tasks outlined in the job ad!

Also don't forget to research the company and play its games. Make sure people will get the impression that working with you will be a pleasant experience. Do all that and you'll be just fine.
Thanks to Marc for his time.
