Generating revenue in the millions is all well and good, but it's often how willing a publisher is to extend a franchise that illustrates just how it committed it is long term.

The launch of a new coin-op version of Infinity Blade is one such extension, with Epic Games and developer ChAIR Entertainment partnering with Adrenaline Amusements to roll out cabinets across the US from October 28.

It's a big move both for Epic, and the entire industry in truth – coming on the back of arcade versions of Fruit Ninja and Flight Control, it's hard to imagine all too many mobile franchises warranting an assault on the arcades before the advent of the App Store.

Likewise, it's equally hard to imagine a mobile platform serving up series like Infinity Blade a few years ago.

Big play for the big screen

Epic's arcade assault will come first via an unveiling at 2011's Gaming and Electronics Expo in Salt Lake City from October 14, before cabinets start popping up in 57 branches of Dave & Buster's restaurant-cum-entertainment complex two weeks later.

Playing out on a 46-inch screen, Infinity Blade FX will – naturally – be powered by Unreal Engine 3, with both single-player and two-screen multiplayer available.

It'll also tap into Adrenaline's multi-touch TouchFX platform – previously utilised in Fruit Ninja FX and Flight Control FX - with Adrenaline president and leader of innovation David Lachance claiming the arcade version pushes the original concept forward by some degree.

"The original Infinity Blade demonstrated the true potential of triple-A handheld gaming by delivering mind-blowing graphics and awesome gameplay to millions of mobile users," said Lachance.

"We're now taking that experience to a whole new level with an exciting new experience crafted specifically for arcade gamers."
