Meffys 2010 roundup

CBS Mobile the big winner on the night

Meffys 2010 roundup
Crystal chandeliers, lines of champagne flutes – if anything was a sign of the mobile industry’s growing confidence and wealth it was encapsulated in the setting and atmosphere of this year’s Meffys awards.

Held in London’s Grand Connaught rooms in the heart of Holborn, this year’s awards were the largest and arguably the grandest in the event’s seven-year history.

Attendees had flown in from far and wide to see how their apps would fare in the 17 categories on offer, with big names from the phone manufacturer and operator worlds rubbing shoulders against innovative development outfits and large multi-national organisations.

You’re a winner

The big winner of the night was CBS Mobile, which picked up three awards from its six nominations, with NCAA March Madness, TV.com, and City Wize securing the App Store Blockbuster, TV & Video Service, and Innovating App Awards respectively.

It was a disappointing night for Nokia and Hungama Mobile, who both came away from the awards empty-handed despite having six and seven nominations respectively.

The lifetime achievement award this year went to Dr. Andrew Hsu of Synaptics, creator of the capacitive touchscreen, a technology that has become almost synonymous with mobile phone technology over the past few years.

Will's obsession with gaming started off with sketching Laser Squad levels on pads of paper, but recently grew into violently shouting "Tango Down!" at random strangers on the street. He now directs that positive energy into his writing (due in no small part to a binding court order).
