DeNA's Chinese focus pays off as Mobage motors on to 5 million
Though much of the battle between Japanese social gaming giants DeNA and GREE is now taking place outside of Asia – the US a particular target – the former's decision to focus on China looks to be paying off.

Representatives for the company have revealed to tech news site Impress Watch that the firm's Mobage platform has a total of 60 games on offer in the region, with 50 on Android and 10 on iOS.

The China question

More interesting than that, however, is news that the platform's Chinese userbase has just hit 5 million.

That's from a base of what DeNA believes is a total of 150 million smartphone users in the region.

Top title so far is Ninja Royale, which boasts 2.5 million of its own – half of Mobage's total userbase – though the site claims third-party titles could form the focus in the months ahead.

Mobage hit Ninja Royale

Visibility is also key. DeNA has signed off deals with 15 different app stores across China, with Mobage games spreading across marketplaces.

The news comes days after news that rival GREE's Asian-based games are failing to take off in the US, though the company's western-themed titles are fairing better.
