Nokia to simplify its mobile games strategy

How? Er...

Nokia to simplify its mobile games strategy
Nokia has announced plans to "focus the strategy of its Services unit", which will include focusing "investments on fewer initiatives and increase the use of common enablers across certain services".

As you do.

But there's a specific impact on gaming, since the announcement states that "all mobile games will now become available through the Ovi Store, in addition to through their existing channels".

Niklas Savander, EVP of services at Nokia, explains (kind of): "We believe this will create a better experience for Nokia's millions of customers and spur opportunities for game developers."

He also talks about "accelerating the development of a common platform for Nokia's different service offerings".

The reason we've put so much in quotes above is because we genuinely don't know what the announcement means, specifically for N-Gage.

It does say that 450 employees will be affected by the changes, although that includes streamlining parts of its corporate development office too.

But getting back to games: Nokia had already announced that services like MOSH, WidSets and Download would be rolled into the Ovi Store, so the new announcement presumably doesn't relate to that.

And the company has also said that N-Gage games will be promoted in Ovi Store but maintained as a separate channel.

Is this new announcement simply repeating that? Or is this the first sign of N-Gage being scaled down and rolled into Ovi Store like the other services?

Naturally, we're on the case to find out.
