Nvidia: Android is the 'most versatile operating system we've ever known'

For a company typically associated with PCs, Nvidia is suddently in the habit of making bold predictions about the rise of Android as a gaming platform.

Speaking to analysts during a conference call, CEO Jen-Hsun took time out to claim that Google's OS is "not just about phones", but rather could prove to be the platform that rules across multiple form factors.

"Android is probably the most versatile operating system that we've ever known, and has the benefit of also being connected to the cloud", he continued.

"The day that you turn it on, it's incredibly useful, with all kinds of applications already on it."

Vision

Of course, Nvidia has been open about its intent to expands its hand in the mobile handset market and, even more prominently, has shared its vision for Android gaming with the world via the release of its handheld, Nvidia Shield.

As such, Huang was not going to let an opportunity to big up Shield pass him by.

"Shield is our initiative to cultivate the gaming marketplace for Android", he said. "We believe that Android is going to be a very important platform for gaming in the future, and to do so we have to create devices that enable great gaming to happen on Android."

Of course, it is worth remembering that even the Shield isn't a mobile gaming only venture – the device also supports PC game streaming.

However, Huang's words strongly suggest there will be more in store from Nvidia on the Android gaming front in the years to come.
