Of all the third party gaming networks on iOS, it's arguable OpenFeint has best integrated with Apple's Game Center.

But that hasn't stopped the company taking its tools to rival platforms. OpenFeint's run on Android has been particularly successful, having topped 8 million downloads within its first few months.

Every app store, every platform

Now, the network is expanding its horizons further, rolling out a set of APIs via a private beta that will enable developers to tap up OpenFeint in their titles on more platforms.

"We believe games should connect people, regardless of what device or mobile OS they own," said CEO and founder Jason Citron.

"With the release of OpenFeint Connect, we give game developers the flexibility they need to take their games and game data to players everywhere. Developers are always asking if we support the Mac App Store, now with this API, we can support them."

Opening windows

The press blitz for the launch of the APIs also cites Windows Phone 7 as a supported platform new ground for OpenFeint, and a timely announcement given  rival Scoreloop unveiled support for Microsoft's OS just hours before.

Still, it hasn't formally revealed what platforms it now covers, but the mention of Pre 3 suggests webOS is now on the list too, leaving RIM's yet-to-be released QNX as the only obvious gap.

The universal

"To really thrive, we think social networks must be able to work across every platform and device," added chairman Peter Relan.

"OpenFeint launched the first mobile social network and, with OpenFeint Connect, we're now the first truly cross platform gaming network."

The company claims standard OpenFeint features from leaderboards to friends lists will be synced across all formats.

Developers interested in taking part in the beta are advised to visit OpenFeint's website.
