Nokia: Ovi Store hits 1.5 million downloads a day
User registrations double in February
 Product: Ovi Store
 Manufacturer: Nokia
by Keith Andrew
Nokia's Ovi Store is generating 1.5 million downloads a day according to the company's own stats, the Finnish firm revealing that users have picked up 12 apps each on average since the store's launch.

The company is naturally keen to portray the Ovi Store as a more successful venture than its previous digital download efforts, Ovi having recently replaced the troubled N-Gage platform.

As such, Nokia said user registrations doubled in February when compared to the previous month, the store now available on 60 Symbian based smartphones and more than 100 handsets in total.

In truth, this still puts the Ovi Store some measure behind the likes the App Store and Android Market.

The most recent report by mobile advertising network AdMob claimed half of all iPhone users and 21 per cent of Android consumers download at least one paid app every month.

Not-so-angry birds

Nonetheless, the Ovi Store still has merit for many developers. Back in January, Angry Birds creator Rovio Mobile revealed the game had been downloaded almost as many times in its first week on the Ovi Store as it managed in six weeks on the App Store.

Nokia, too, believes there is strength aplenty in the platform, daily download highs reaching 1,300 a minute.

Ovi also has a well spread base across both western and emerging markets, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Turkey, and the UK all featuring in the store's top ten countries in terms of downloads, as well as India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam.
